Obesophobia- The Fear of Gaining an Extra Inch

I have always wondered if there is a word for what I feel every day; I mean, the fear of adding extra weight, and boom - I discovered the magic word Obesophobia”. Simply put, it means the intense fear of gaining weight or getting fat.

One out of five people in Nigeria suffers from this phobia. We cut out meals, obsessively count our calories, starve ourselves or even start a water diet all because we want to snap our waists back without doing the necessary exercise to shed some weight.

Having to constantly worry about gaining weight causes anxiety and opens doors to disguised health hazards. We begin to entertain dangerous suggestions like taking lots of laxatives and even consider going to the extreme; all because we don’t want to spend 15 minutes or more doing some high-intensity interval training exercise. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but wearing a waist trainer won’t make you have a flat tummy either.

Wondering what works? Here are a few tips to help get over your fear of adding an extra inch.

  1. Register at a gym or get a personal trainer and start working out at least 3 times a week.
  2. Reduce your sugar consumption.
  3. Eat lots of veggies.
  4. Take breathing exercises.
  5. Take long walks when you can.
  6. Sleep well.
  7. Drink lots of water.
  8. Reduce your intake of junk food
  9. Circle back to point 1- Register to a gym or hire a trainer today. Youtube videos and exercise plans are also great, provided you are disciplined enough to be consistent.

Having a trim body is fine, but the greater goal is to be fit. And if you’ve ever attended a Vervelife event, you already know that’s what we are about.
