The company started operations in 2002 as a transaction switching and electronic payments processing company that builds and manages payment infrastructure as well as deliver innovative payment products and transactional services throughout the African continent.

Interswitch has demonstrated consistent, strong and profitable growth since the business was founded. This strong growth has enabled Interswitch to expand into more sectors and more country markets than any other payments company in Africa.

Interswitch Transnational acquired Paynet in 2014 to create an unrivalled payment infrastructure across East and West Africa, uniting financial institutions on a single network, integrating transaction solutions seamlessly into businesses, and creating a secure and convenient way to make cross-border transactions.

Paynet was founded in Kenya in 2003; it provided services to some financial institutions, corporate organisations and numerous public sector entities.

Interswitch is the owner of Verve, the market leading payment card scheme; Quickteller, the leading multi-channel payment portal that can be accessed online, on mobile phones, at ATMs and kiosks; and PesaPoint found at 1,200 ATM locations, and over 1,300 agent locations in Kenya.
